Common Laptop Problems

Trouble Shooting Laptops:

You can think of troubleshooting like one of those choose your own ending books. We all have to start at page one, but where you go from there is anyone's guess. All attempts at troubleshooting something should start at its most basic and move its way progressively more difficult.

I Want To Repair My Laptop

There's two options for this. You can either:

Laptop Is Not Powering On When I Press The Power Button

Most of the time is caused by a failed ac power adapter, but don't assume anything. Always begin at step one, I've wasted plenty of time myself troubleshooting only to find that it was the simplest of all problems. Think of power problems like finding a leak in a hose. At some point its not getting from point a to b. Always follow the path never skip even the most basic of paths:

  • Check that the power outlet that you at using getting power .
  • Make sure that you have the correct amperage and correct voltage ac power adapter for your laptop.
  • About one in 100 times it will be your laptops power cord and not the adapter itself.
  • Try using a known good power adapter on your laptop.
  • Try re-seating the battery, odd I know, but I've had several computers that wouldn't turn on and simply taking out the battery and putting it back in solved the problem.
  • Check and see if you can wiggle the adapter around in the laptop. If you can then your power jack is loose and you will have to decide if you want to repair it or not.
  • Make sure that the power button is firm to the touch.
  • Try re-seating the ram
  • Make sure that the keys are not sticky, if they are that means that you've had liquid spilled on your laptop and the odds for recovery are against you.

Smoke is coming out of my laptop / My laptop melted the tip of my power adapter

If this has happened your laptop will most likely need a new power jack and should be taken to a local repair shop and fixed, which will cost approximately $150 Purchasing a new Power adapter and cord will not solve the problem and will result in the exact same thing happening to your new power adapter.

My Laptop's keyboard is sticky / I spilled Liquid on my laptop

If your laptop's keyboard is sticky then somehow liquid has been spilled on it. I've heard people many a time deny that anything was spilled. Your dog, cat or kids could have easily spilled something on your laptop. It's best to not have liquids near your laptop, ever.

If you've recently spilled some sort of liquid on your laptop, beer, wine, tea, soda, sports drink, the first thing you ought to do is cut off any power that the laptop is getting. Pull the power cord from the outlet. Pull the battery from the bottom of the laptop. Next everything thinks they should shake out there laptop. There is no need to, simply turn it upside down and let the liquid drain out. If your lucky, you may be able to get a new keyboard and only have to clean trace amounts of liquid from the laptop.

If your unlucky then you may have to purchase a new laptop. Remember this, the longer the liquid is allowed to sit on the electronic components, the more it will corrode. Sugar is present in almost everything we drink nowadays and it is very corrosive on a laptops inner components. I've seen an entire two liter of Coke spilled on a laptop and a fellow tech get it to work before, but there are too many factors to have any likelihood of success if you try to clean it or you have a professional try to

My laptop powers on but there is no image on the screen

This is caused by a problem with one of three things, the video cable, LCD, or Video chip and not by a laptops adapter. Purchasing a new laptop adapter will not solve this problem. Try connecting your laptop to an external monitor and making sure to switch it over to an external display with the function and f series keys. If nothing shows up once you've hooked up the monitor to your laptop, then you have a bad video chip and will need a new laptop.

My laptop's lcd gets brighter when I plug it in

This is due to power saving settings setup by default. The laptop's LCD consumes the most amount of power out of any other component on the laptop. So by default it sets the LCD to use less power. Once it is plugged in the laptop detects that it is getting enough power and brightens up the laptops LCD

My laptop is dead. Can I still get my data?

If you've determined that repairing your laptop is not feasible you can still get at your data by purchasing an external enclosure. These allow you to take out your old hard drive and connect it via usb to another computer. If it had a windows password make sure to take ownership of the drive. Windows Vista will automatically do this, but a few steps will be required for Windows XP.
