Laptop TroubleshootingYou press the power button on your laptop, but nothing happens, no lights, no power no anything. It must be the laptops ac power adapter right? Often, but not always. Here are some simple steps to save time and frustration before purchasing a new ac power adapter for your laptop.
If none of these tips have worked and or there is no light on your laptops ac power adapter, you ought to test the laptop with a known good ac power adapter. When I wiggle around my adapter my laptops charging light goes on then off. This is cause by your laptops power jack becoming loose from the motherboard. Laptop power jacks are only soldered onto the motherboard in 3 or 4 points and over time those solder points break down and your computer is no longer able to receive power to turn on or charge the battery. Almost every single manufacturer has this defect. Most laptops along with most other contemporary products are designed to be thrown away in a year or two and upgraded to a newer one. A handful of Sony and all IBM Laptops have power jack harnesses that allow the power jack to wiggle, but still keep it attached to the motherboard. Unfortunately getting a power jack repair is a very labor intensive procedure. Generally laptops take at least an hour often time several to disassemble down to the motherboard and reassemble. Because of that a power jack is often $100-200 to replace despite the part itself only being $10-30. Solutions: When purchasing an adapter you should make sure of a few things.
Correct WattageYour adapter should be within one amp or one volt of what is listed on the bottom of your laptop. Any more than that can actually cause damage. What does that mean? On the bottom of your laptop there should be a stick that says what type of ac power adapter it takes. For example on a Dell E1505 there will be a stick that says: Dell PA-10 / 12 19V 4.62A Even though the label states that it can accept either a Dell PA-10 which is 90 watts = 19.5V 4.62A or a PA-12 which is 65 watts = 19V 3.34A, the ideal adapter would be the PA-10. As a general rule of thumb you should not use an adapter that is greater than 1.5V or 1.5A of your laptops specifications. Doing so can actually cause damage to your laptops motherboard overtime. |
